PJ Clarke's Packed for 120th Birthday Celebration

A ship's Captain who has been coming to PJ Clarke's for 60 years; an elderly couple from cross-town who had never been before; a thirty'ish couple, he in jeans and a blazer, she in a T Shirt and stiletto heels; a father guiding his two sons, one six with a crew cut, the other 12 wearing spiked hair, into PJ's for the first time; all came to Midtown Manhattan's East Side last Sunday to join in PJ Clarke's 120th birthday celebration. From the moment the dining room doors opened at 11:30 AM until the kitchen closed at 3:00 AM, burgers were the menu item of choice. Thousands were served along with Guinness, single malt and an occasional Coca Cola as PJ Clarke's, America's quintessential saloon, celebrated its founding in 1884 by an Englishman named "Jennings." Frank Sinatra sang Johnny Mercer's "One For My Baby" from the jukebox as the Terrier watched down on the festivities from atop the bathroom. Rocky Graciano's bigger than life smile played against the illustration on the Egyptian Cigarette poster. One time only commemorative T Shirts turned the patrons and wait staff into a sea of navy blue.On Monday, as it does every day, 365 times each year, PJ's welcomed back the newsmakers sitting next to the CEOs sitting beside the ironworkers on break from the skyscraper going up down the street.

Oysters from the Raw Bar, Flatiron Steak, Onion Strings, Shepard's Pie, Macaroni & Cheese with Peas & Bacon and Prime Filet Mignon were served. A magazine editor who missed the birthday party ordered a bacon cheeseburger and chatted up the actresses who would be stopping by before closing. The tennis star who lost at the Open volleyed with a waitress asking that his French Fries be well done. Ashley Judd, Brooke Shields and Renee Zellweger have replaced Liz Taylor, Joan Crawford and Jackie O but the unique spirit, atmosphere and experience that is PJ Clarke's shows no signs of abating for another 120 years. It's a Wonderful Life

It's a Wonderful LifeIn November 1996 I was made redundant from a senior role within the Investment banking industry; I felt lost. I looked for a new role in the newspapers and with many recruitment agencies, nothing even sparked my interest. No surprise, I was unsuccessful at all interviews, there was not a new job for me.In February 1997 I got the message that changed my life forever. At the insistence of a close friend I had gone to visit Jean Clarke, a Colonic therapist. During the first minute of my initial visit to Jean, she said had a message for me, but was dubious about giving me the message. I insisted.

The message was that the man in front of her (me) felt his life was over and the affect of this would be this. Within two years I would become seriously ill and die within five years. Even the love of for my wife and two young sons would not be enough to keep me here. I had given none of this personal information to Jean.I was shaken; Jeans' message resonated with me as...

The Work-from-home Fashion Primer

Last week, I reported how writers, stay-at-home parents and online marketing geeks had chosen careers as hermits: http://www.thehappyguy.com/hermit.htmlThousands of work-from-home hermits responded, confessing that they were wearing their pajamas while reading my column. Fortunately very few sent me photos. Here are some of the questions they asked:Q: Is it acceptable to wear pajamas at high noon if Nobody sees me, or am I committing a fashion faux-pas.A: It is totally acceptable to wear pajamas at high noon. You can even wear them at low noon. In fact, you can wear them all day long.

The only exception is in England you must not wear pajamas at tea time. Pajamas and tea don't mix. The combination can be lethal. (See the November 2002 report: "Spontaneous combustion among British work-at-home hermits.")Q: How should I handle "casual Fridays" in my workplace?A: I have replaced casual Fridays with "formal Thursdays...

Fisherman Sweater History

The Fisherman Sweater Fisherman sweaters used to be something that were seen as items of warm and rugged work wear, but much as changed, and fisherman sweaters have followed jeans to make that transformation from work wear to a 20th century fashionable clothing item.Fisherman Sweater HistoryRooted in our common heritage, commercial fishermen, weekend sailors, farmers and in fact people from all walks of life love the fisherman sweater. At sea, and in town, it is a symbol of simpler times when you could look good in something that was designed just to be practical and keep you warm, not to show off a label in order to be some kind of status symbol like many garments manufactured today. The fisherman sweater has its origins in Brittany. Surprisingly it was not the fishermen that started to wear them, but merchants who during the 18th century travelled to England to sell onions, these merchants wore an item of knitted wool clothing that made them recognizable from a distance, the garments...
